Khargone District Administration Maintains Curfew for Eid, Ensures Relief for Communal Violence Victims

Local politicians from both the ruling BJP and opposition Congress have mentioned that normalcy is gradually returning to the town, but the district administration of Khargone in Madhya Pradesh is not taking any chances following recent communal violence. They have decided to maintain the curfew during Eid on Tuesday, despite some calls for relaxation.

Curfew has been in place in various parts of Khargone since April 10, when communal violence erupted during a procession. Many houses were set on fire and over two dozen people, including Superintendent of Police Siddharth Choudhary, were injured.

The administration has been easing the curfew for a few hours each day depending on the situation. However, they have announced that there will be no relaxation on Eid and that prayers should be conducted at home.

District collector Anugraha P mentioned that curfew is being relaxed daily from 8 am to 5 pm or 10 am to 5 pm for essential activities. Relief funds totaling Rs 1 crore have been distributed to 122 affected individuals from both Hindu and Muslim communities, without discrimination.

Efforts are being made to assist those whose properties were damaged to restart their lives in other locations. Mohalla peace committee meetings have been organized to build confidence, with local politicians and community leaders participating.

Congress MLA Ravi Joshi emphasized the importance of peace committee meetings for restoring confidence. However, he expressed concern over the confusion regarding curfew relaxation hours.

Former leader Balkrishna Patidar noted a decrease in tension and an improvement in the situation, with efforts being made to reduce anger, help victims, and ensure fair distribution of compensation.

Additional security measures have been put in place ahead of Eid, with around 1,000 extra police personnel, including 300 Rapid Action Force personnel, stationed in the city since April 10.
