Central India’s Crucial Role at the UN Highlighted by Maldives Foreign Minister

Abdulla Shahid, the President of the United Nations General Assembly and Foreign Minister of Maldives, emphasized the important role that India plays at the UN. Following his meeting with Shahid, Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar highlighted the alignment between India’s “Neighbourhood First” policy and the Maldives’ “India First” policy.

During his visit to India, Shahid engaged in discussions with Jaishankar on various significant topics, including collaboration at the UN.

Recognizing India’s crucial contribution to the global Covid recovery efforts, the Maldivian leader emphasized that India had emerged as the “pharmacy of the world,” providing assistance to numerous countries across the globe.

Additionally, Jaishankar met with Maldivian Speaker and former president Mohammad Nasheed, who is also in India. Nasheed mentioned, “We talked about the challenges faced by Maldives and other Indian Ocean island nations. The crisis in Sri Lanka is of mutual concern to us.”
