Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has called on members of the Indian diaspora to support Indian brands and businesses while living abroad, emphasizing their role as ambassadors for the country. She encouraged collaboration with businesses of all sizes, highlighting the opportunities available to the diaspora in the aspirational Indian society.

Speaking at the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas Convention in Indore, Sitharaman commended the diaspora for their contributions to their host countries while staying connected to their Indian roots. She emphasized the importance of promoting Indian brands and providing feedback on policies to drive India’s development.

As of December 31, 2021, there were 32 million NRIs and PIOs living abroad, according to the Ministry of External Affairs. Sitharaman urged the diaspora to engage with Indian businesses, from small to large, to leverage their entrepreneurial skills and contribute to India’s growth by 2047.

Highlighting the significance of remittances, Sitharaman noted that India received $100 billion in 2022, a 12% increase from the previous year. She pointed out that remittances are crucial for household income in low- and middle-income countries like India.

India aims to position itself as an alternative manufacturing hub to China and the European Union, offering opportunities for businesses looking to diversify their production locations. Sitharaman emphasized India’s potential as an attractive option for manufacturers seeking new markets beyond traditional regions.
