Congress Nominee Attacked in Agartala – Urgent Call to Action

Sudip Roy Barman, the Congress nominee for the upcoming by-election in the Agartala Assembly constituency, was injured in an attack by miscreants who threw bricks at him in Ujan Abjoynagar, as reported by the police on Monday.

A former minister and a five-time MLA, Roy Barman has been hospitalized and is said to be in stable condition, according to a party leader.

The incident occurred late on Sunday when Roy Barman visited the home of Congress worker Alok Goswami, whose house was targeted by a group of youths that night, stated a police officer.

“The youths had gathered outside the house of Goswami, a BJP worker who recently switched to the Congress,” said Officer-in-Charge Uttam Paul of Abhoynagar Outpost.

A confrontation broke out between the group and Roy Barman’s personal security guards when he arrived at Goswami’s residence, the OC explained.

“Before we could arrive at the scene, the former MLA was struck by bricks and fell to the ground. One of the police officers also sustained injuries,” he added.

Roy Barman, who joined the Congress earlier this year after leaving the BJP, suffered a nasal bone fracture from the impact of the bricks, as reported by Mohila Congress leader Sikha Deb.

“We have not yet received a formal complaint regarding the incident involving the former MLA,” said Paul.

Birajit Sinha, President of the Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee, condemned the attack on Roy Barman and accused the situation of worsening after the visit of the Assam Chief Minister for the by-election campaign on Sunday.

“I urge voters to respond to the BJP-sponsored ‘gundaraj’ through the ballot in the June 23 by-polls,” he stated.

In the meantime, the BJP (Agartala Mandal) has filed a complaint with the police, alleging that a group of Congress supporters vandalized its flags and decorations in Ujan Abhoynagar on Sunday night.

The by-polls for four assembly segments are scheduled for June 23, with vote counting set for June 26.
